Halloween: Dog Edition

As pup parents, there are several ways to make Halloween memorable for us and our pups. Here are just a few ideas on how to spend the holiday as well as a few things to consider:

Halloween tips for dog owners:

Although Halloween can be a very fun holiday, it can also be a very spooky time for dogs. It’s important to know what may trigger your dog, to best avoid it. In my experience, fireworks are a big no-no for Zeus, so that’s something I take into consideration when making plans for the day.

Trick or treaters. It’s likely you’ll get quite a few knocks at your door throughout the night, and if your dog is anything like mine, they’ll get excitable each time the doorbell rings. If that is the case, set up provisions to help minimise how often this happens, i.e., a sign on the door or taking your dog out for most of the evening.

It is likely that there will be more sweets and chocolates around than normal, so make sure to keep them well out of reach! Chocolate is poisonous and deadly for dogs, so it is important that they are kept well away from it.

Halloween dog costumes

Costumes. The first and probably the most important thing to think about for the holiday! Halloween is a great opportunity to find cute and funny costumes, or to get creative and make one of your own.

I’d be lying if I said I was the creative and artistic type, so this simple costume that I made for Zeus was perfect for me , and doesn’t he look adorable?!

To recreate this takes mostly household items, and possibly a trip to your local store if you don’t already have red and white paper lying around. I used foam paper, but you could really use any type of paper - after all it’s just for fun and to take some cute pics.

Bake some Halloween Dog Treats

There are loads of Halloween treat recipes available online that are quick and easy to follow. If you’re anything like me, and are not the greatest at following complex recipes, I would recommend trying out one of these recipes from kolchakpuggle.com - Zeus is a big fan of the grain-free no bake peanut butter and pumpkin dog treats!

Pumpkins!

If you’re wondering whether to take your dog to visit a pumpkin patch this autumn, I recently came across a blog on houndy that located the best dog-friendly pumpkin patches around the UK - how handy?!

As well as pumpkin patch activities being a fun Halloween/autumn tradition, pumpkins are also great for dogs to consume in moderate amounts, as they are a superfood. There are quite a few ways to to cook pumpkin for your dog and has several health benefits including: being great for digestion, nutrition and reducing instances of diarrhoea.

While we’re on the topic of pumpkins, I just had to share the cutest pic of this sweetheart Milo, dressed up in his pumpkin outfit; too cute!!

Got any cute pics of your pup to send in? We’d love to see it! Just email us at team@shopdestinationdog.com or send us DM.
